Mammillaria compressa, often referred to by the name "Mother of Hundreds", is a cactus native to Mexico. This plant starts off solitary, with just one head. But as the plant ages, the cactus begins clumping, forming mounds of many heads. A mature mounding plant can be up to a meter wide!
When flowering, expect to see a ring of pink blooms atop each head. This cactus is great for beginners, as it is easy to cultivate, and has needs similar to many other cactus. It needs well-draining soil, and plenty of root space.
Mammillaria compressa is rather quick to clump, compared to other mammillarias, and will need extra space and be repotted every 2 - 3 years as it grows!
Avoid overwatering or soil that stays too damp for too long, as the plant is moisture sensitive, and will display untidy growing habits and become swollen if overwatered/overshaded.
Mammillaria compressa is rather frost-tolerant, as long as the soil is dry. This plant can thrive in a variety of light levels, and like other species of cactus, can burn if over-exposed, but will bronze in strong light, which stimulates dense spine and flower production.
This cactus, due to its rapid-growing mound structures throughout its life, would be an excellent cactus to start out in pots of increasing sized, before transferring to a large final bed, especially as the specimen reaches sizes like a meter in diameter!
