Ferocactus histrix is an awesome solitary plant that can grow to about about 36-40 inches tall by 20-30 inches in diameter. The plant has a medium green body color with about 20-40 or more ribs and is moderately covered by light yellow to yellow-brown spines. Bright lemon yellow flowers can appear on plants as little as 5 inches in diameter. The species is fairly widespread in central and east-central Mexico, being found in the states of Durango, Zacatecas, Aguascalientes, Jalisco, San Luis Potosi, Guanajuato, Queretaro, and Hidalgo. Young plants have proven hardy to at least the mid-teens and older plants should be able to tolerate even lower temperatures in the desert southwest.
